How would you describe your music?

The music I’m writing now is in the indie folk and indie pop/rock categories and tends to be lyrical and melodic but my influences include jazz and blues genres, which you can sometimes hear in the keyboards.

What is your creative process like?

I’m writing from home and most often a song is inspired by a difficult experience. I might wake up with a line in my head that has a melody, and then I’ll sit down with a guitar and go from there. Once I have the guitar and vocals I record tracks in my living room with a mic plugged into my laptop, and add the bass, keyboards and sometime a drum track from there. I play all of the instruments myself other than the drum tracks, and do the mixing and mastering as well. That part I just taught myself this year and I hope to learn a lot more about it to improve the sound quality of my songs.

Where have you performed?

Throughout the years I’ve played in coffee shops and restaurants, back in my 20s I played in small jazz and folk groups in the San Francisco Bay Area and in my 30’s I played with a group called Mountain Folk and performed with Mila Vocal Ensemble. I have focused on songwriting only since we’ve been in the pandemic world of 2020, and have not performed live since releasing my album due to that.

What is your favourite song to perform?

I love playing the blues on the piano and singing harmonies with other people. Music is most exciting when you can play with other musicians and I miss that right now, but it’s also been great to teach myself to be a stronger solo musician and I really like doing folk covers, like the one with the link above.

What can we expect from you in the future? Any releases planned? Future gigs?

I intend to collaborate with other musicians once the world opens back up post pandemic and I would like to put out a more heavily jazz influenced album.

Would you have any advice for would-be artists or songwriters wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Stick with your craft and allow your music to mature. It’s really important to branch out and experiment with different musical genres and experiences.

And lastly, give us a rundown of who is in the band and what they do.

I am a solo artist at the moment and I play guitar, bass, keyboards, mandolin and sing all vocal tracks on my recordings.
